ATHENS, Ga. --Georgia State went toe-to-toe with No. 4 Georgia and held a late lead, but an eight-run eighth inning by the Bulldogs proved to be the difference in a 14-9 loss Tuesday afternoon at Foley Field.
The Panthers move to 13-17 on the season, while Georgia improves to 24-6.
Georgia State struck first in the second inning. Sam Silas singled, and Cooper Milford walked before Austin Sellers added a base hit to load the bases. Jae Williams followed with an RBI hit-by-pitch to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless stretch, Georgia State extended its lead in the fifth inning. Sellers reached with a single and later scored when Wills Maginnis launched a two-run home run to left field, pushing the advantage to 3-0.
Georgia answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs to take its first lead of the game at 5-3.
The Panthers continued to battle and delivered their biggest offensive inning in the eighth. Maginnis was hit by a pitch, and Cole Griffith worked a walk before John Beverley delivered a three-run home run to left field, his first career home run, to tie the game at 6-6.
Later in the inning, Carter Bailey singled, and Sam Silas doubled down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position. Adam Haber then connected on a pinch-hit three-run home run to right field, his first home run as a Panther, to give Georgia State a 9-6 lead.
Georgia responded immediately in the bottom of the eighth, scoring eight runs on four hits and capitalizing on walks and timely hitting to regain control at 14-9.
Maginnis finished with two RBIs, while Beverley and Haber each drove in three runs on their home runs. Silas led the Panthers with three hits, and Sellers added two hits as Georgia State totaled nine hits in the contest.
Hunter Atkins made his first start on the mound, allowing three runs over 4.1 innings while striking out five. Georgia State used nine pitchers in the game.
Georgia State will return to action Thursday, opening a three-game Sun Belt series at ULM. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
