Georgia State Drops Series Finale at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, WV -- Georgia State fell to Marshall, 13-7, Sunday afternoon at Jack Cook Field to conclude the Sun Belt Conference opening series.

With the loss, the Panthers move to 10-11 overall and 0-3 in Sun Belt play, while Marshall improves to 11-8 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

Georgia State jumped out to an early lead with a five-run second inning. John Beverley was hit by a pitch to start the rally before Brandon Davis drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Hunter Carlson followed with a three-run double to center field, and Wills Maginnis later came around to score on a throwing error to give the Panthers a 5-0 advantage.

The Panthers added another run in the third inning when Beverley singled and later scored on a fielding error to extend the lead to 6-0.

Marshall began its comeback in the third inning with a two-run home run from Tyler Kamerer before tying the game in the fourth on a grand slam by Evan Bottone.

The Thundering Herd took control of the game in the seventh inning, scoring five runs on three hits to take an 11-6 lead. Marshall added two more runs in the eighth inning to extend the margin.

Georgia State added a run in the ninth inning when Maginnis doubled and later scored on an RBI groundout by Beverley.

Maginnis led the Panthers offensively with three hits, while Carlson drove in three runs with his second-inning double. Beverley finished with two runs scored and an RBI, and Brandon Davis and Wesley Bass each added an RBI.

Cole Roberts started on the mound for Georgia State, allowing six runs over four innings. Cooper Lewis (1-1) was charged with the loss in relief.

Georgia State will return home Tuesday to host West Georgia at the GSU Baseball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
