HUNTINGTON, WV -- Georgia State fell 4-2 to Marshall on Saturday afternoon at Jack Cook Field.
With the loss, the Panthers fall to 10-10 overall and 0-2 in Sun Belt Conference play, while Marshall improves to 10-8 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Georgia State struck first in the opening inning. John Beverley reached on an error and moved into scoring position before Wills Maginnis brought him home with a sacrifice fly to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Marshall answered in the fourth inning to tie the game. After a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases, Jack Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to even the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the seventh inning when Marshall broke through with a three-run frame. A Georgia State throwing error helped extend the inning before Smith delivered a two-run double to give the Thundering Herd the lead. Evan Bottone followed with an RBI single to push the advantage to 4-1.
Georgia State trimmed the deficit in the eighth inning. Austin Sellers reached on an error and moved to third on a single from Brandon Davis before Beverley laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought Sellers home to make it 4-2.
Beverley led the Panthers offensively with a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Wesley Bass also recorded a hit, while Davis added a pinch-hit single.
Jake Hembree started on the mound for Georgia State and allowed one run over 3.0 innings while striking out four. Tysen Benford (2-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs in relief.
Georgia State and Marshall will conclude the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Huntington.
