LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia State completed the series sweep of Bellarmine with an 18-8 victory Sunday afternoon at Gwinnett Field.
The Panthers improve to 6-2 on the season, while Bellarmine falls to 2-5.
Georgia State broke the game open early, erupting for eight runs in the second inning. Austin Sellers jumpstarted the rally with a two-RBI double, Adam Haber followed with a two-run single, and John Beverley delivered the biggest blow of the frame with a three-RBI triple to left center as the Panthers built an 8-0 lead.
The Panthers added another run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Wills Maginnis to extend the advantage to 9-0.
Bellarmine pushed across two unearned runs in the fourth, but Georgia State responded in the fifth. Hunter Carlson delivered a two-run single to stretch the lead to 11-2.
The Bears cut into the deficit with three runs in the seventh, but Carlson answered in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to center, his first of the season.
Georgia State put the game away with a six-run eighth inning. Carson Bailey tripled home a run, Maginnis drew a bases-loaded walk, and Carlson capped his career day with a three-RBI double. Austin Killingsworth added an RBI single as the Panthers pushed the lead to 18-5.
Carlson led the offensive explosion, finishing 4-for-5 with a home run, double and seven RBIs. Sellers went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, while Garagozzo added two hits. Beverley tripled and drove in three runs. The Panthers totaled 17 hits and drew nine walks.
On the mound, Jake Hembree started and allowed two runs (both unearned) over 4.0 innings with five strikeouts. Joshua Evans (1-0) earned the win in relief. Georgia State used nine pitchers in the contest to secure the victory.
The Panthers outscored Bellarmine 27-11 over the final two games to complete the three-game sweep at Gwinnett Field.
Georgia State will look to carry the momentum into an in-state midweek at #2 Georgia Tech on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
