Box Score ATLANTA – Four Panthers to recorded two hits as Georgia State defeated New Orleans 10-6 on Opening Day at the GSU Baseball Complex on Friday evening.
Georgia State (1-0) and New Orleans (0-1) will conclude their series with a doubleheader on Saturday, February 14 at the GSU Baseball Complex. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m.
Nick Garagozzo,
Hunter Carlson,
Wesley Bass and
Jae Williams led the Panther offense with two hits each. Garagozzo drove in three runs, Carlson drove in two, and Bass drove in one on a solo home run, his first collegiate hit, in the sixth inning.
Lucas Grantham also chipped in with two RBI's on a base hit through the left side in the third inning
The win gave Georgia State its fifth straight win on Opening Day and 12
th in their last 14 seasons.
How it Happened
Georgia State trailed 5-4 in the sixth when Bass tied the game with his solo home run over the left field wall. Then, after a pitching change,
Sam Silas and
John Beverley walked and moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. A sacrifice fly to right field by
Wills Maginnis scored Silas, and Beverley scored on a single by
Hunter Carlson to give the Panthers a 7-5 lead before Carlson scored on an error at third base to make it 8-5.
The Panthers would then pad their lead with two runs on two hits in the seventh. Bass led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a base hit by Beverley, who would then score three batters later on a base hit by Carlson to make it 10-5.
New Orleans scratched one run across in the ninth, but it was too little, too late. The Privateers did most of their damage in the fifth inning when they scored five runs on six hits to take a 5-4 lead.
GSU drew first blood in the first inning when Garagozzo drove in one run on a single to make it 1-0. The Panthers would then add to their lead with three runs, the first on a bases-loaded walk, and the next two on Grantham's base hit, in the third inning.
