ATLANTA – Georgia State swept a doubleheader against New Orleans 12-4 and 5-4 to complete a series sweep at the GSU Baseball Complex on Saturday afternoon and move to 3-0 on the season.
John Beverley went a combined 3-for-7 with two RBI's to lead Georgia State (3-0) at the plate, and
Wills Maginnis and
Wesley Bass drove in three runs each across both games.
Nick Garagozzo went 2-for-4 with two RBI's in Game One.
Cole Griffith added two hits in Game One, and
Hunter Carlson drove in two runs in Game Two.
Game One: Georgia State 12, New Orleans 4
Down 1-0 in the first inning, Georgia State blew the game open with six runs on five hits in the bottom frame. With one out and runners on second and third,
Carter Bailey tied the game with an RBI groundout, and then
Nick Garagozzo hit an RBI single to right field, advanced to second on a single by
Cole Griffith, and scored along with Griffith on a base clearing double by
Wesley Bass to make it 4-1 Panthers. Then, after a walk,
John Beverley drove Bass home with a single to left field before another walk loaded the bases for
Wills Maginnis, who then drew an RBI walk himself to make it 6-1 Panthers.
New Orleans (0-3) chipped into the lead with one run each in the second and fifth innings, but GSU slammed the door with three runs each in the fifth and seventh.

Brian Crooms (1-0) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win.
True freshman pitcher
Hunter Atkins made his debut in the sixth inning and pitched 3.0 innings of relief, allowing just one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Cooper Lewis also made his debut with a scoreless ninth inning and two strikeouts.
Game Two: Georgia State 5, New Orleans 4
With one out and the score tied 4-4 in the eighth inning,
Hunter Carlson and
Carter Bailey drew consecutive hit by pitches, and
Nick Garagozzo walked to load the bases.
Lucas Grantham would then pop out to first base before
Wesley Bass drew a four-pitch walk to give GSU a 5-4 lead.
Jacob Crews (1-0) hit the first batter he faced in the ninth, but settled in and struck out the next three batters he faced to slam the door and earn his first win of the season. Crews pitched 2.0 scoreless innings with five strikeouts in an outstanding relief effort.
With the score tied 0-0,
Jae Williams led off the first with a single and advanced to second on a
Wills Maginnis hit by pitch before scoring on an errant pickoff attempt by the New Orleans' pitcher to make it 1-0.
The Panthers would add to that lead with one run in the third on a base hit by
Hunter Carlson, and two more runs in the fifth on a wild pitch and fielder's choice by Carlson to make it 4-0.
New Orleans rallied with four runs, three unearned, to tie the game in the seventh, but couldn't muster another run as Crews shut them down for the remainder of the game.
Panther starter
Jake Hembree pitched five scoreless innings and racked up eight strikeouts while allowing just one walk with two hits in a tremendous start, but did not factor into the decision.
Georgia State will travel to Jacksonville, Alabama on Tuesday, February 17, to face Jacksonville State. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
