Donohoe Homers, Freeman Ties Record in Final Midweek Matchup

ATLANTA – Jesse Donohoe hit a two-run home run and Kaleb Freeman tied the GSU single-season walks record but Georgia State fell to USC Upstate 9-4 in their final midweek game of the season at the GSU Baseball Complex on Wednesday evening.

Georgia State will host Marshall at the GSU Baseball Complex on Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m. for Game One of their final home series this season.

A senior infielder Donohoe hit his two-run blast in the first inning with Georgia State (24-26) down 1-0 to give the Panthers an early 2-1 lead.  The Columbus, Ga. native's homer is his 14th of the season.

Kaleb Freeman led off the game with his 53rd walk of the season, tying the original single-season record set by Rob Lind in 2011.

Michael Maginnis tallied two stolen bases to move his career total to 37, which ranks seventh all-time in GSU career history.

USC Upstate (27-22) rattled off four unanswered runs; two in the second inning, and one each in the fourth and sixth to take a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish.  The Spartans out hit the Panthers 12-6.  GSU drew nine walks but hurt themselves with eight walks of their own and four errors that led to four unearned runs, and also left 12 runners on base.

Down 5-2, Georgia State inched closer with one run on a bases-loaded, pinch hit sacrifice fly by Jae Williams in the bottom of the sixth.  The score remained that way until the ninth when USC Upstate pulled away for good with four runs on three hits and an error.  The Panthers tacked on one more run on a sacrifice fly by Michael Maginnis in the bottom of the inning but would get no closer.

Ryan Lamar and Carlos Carmona each delivered 1.0 scoreless innings for the Panthers out of the bullpen.  GSU starter Nick Holbrook (2-1) took the loss.
