Matthews Collects Seven Steals in Georgia State's 70-68 Win at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, WV --Mahogany Matthews racked up 7 steals, and the Georgia State women's basketball team took down the Marshall Thundering Herd 70-68 on the road Friday.

The Panthers (15-15, 8-10) had four players score in double figures, led by Crystal Henderson, who had 15 points. Mikyla Tolivert tacked on 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals and Matthews helped out with 12 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and three blocks.

Georgia State forced 22 Marshall turnovers while committing 13 themselves in Friday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Matthews' seven steals led the way for Georgia State.

How It Happened

After falling behind 10-9, Georgia State went on a 5-0 run with 3:36 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Patience Williams, to take a 14-10 lead. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-16 advantage. Georgia State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 18 points close to the basket.

Marshall rallied to take a 37-26 lead before Georgia State went on a 7-0 run starting at the 2:44 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Mya Williams, to narrow its deficit to 37-33, a score that would hold until halftime.

Georgia State came out of halftime on fire, going on a 7-0 run to grab a 40-37 lead with 5:33 to go in the third. The Panthers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 52-49 edge. Georgia State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.

The Panthers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Georgia State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 18 points in the paint.
