ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia
State Baseball entered Sunday's matinee in search of their second sweep in as many series and their first 6-0 start since 2011. The visitors from UT Martin, however, had other plans in mind and followed through, handing the Panthers their first loss of the season behind an eight-run fifth inning.
The Skyhawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first three innings, but the Panthers were able to quickly pull back within one, plating Connor Griffith and
Jesse Donohoe on a pair of sacrifice flies in the fourth.
The fifth inning spelled trouble for the hosts. UT Martin racked up six hits and took advantage of a Georgia State error to plate eight runs, more than they had scored in either of the first two games of the series.
The Panthers' hot-hitting first and second hitters,
Kaleb Freeman and
Michael Maginnis, each finished the day 2-5 with three RBI. Their efforts at the plate, however, could not spark a comeback. The Skyhawks did not allow their lead to get smaller than five runs, closing out the game by a final score of 14-9.
The Panthers will be back at the GSU Baseball Complex on Tuesday afternoon for a standalone game with in-state rivals Kennesaw State. First pitch will be at 4 p.m.
