Panthers Run-Rule Owls; Off to Best Start since 2011

ATLANTA – Georgia State blasted 14 runs on 10 hits to run-rule Kennesaw State 14-4 in seven innings at the GSU Baseball Complex on Tuesday and move to 6-1, their best start since 2011.

Current head coach Brad Stromdahl was an assistant coach for that GSU squad.

Four Panthers tallied two hits each, led by William Maginnis, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI's, including his bases-loaded, "walk off" double to secure the run-rule victory in the seventh inning.

Michael Maginnis and Nick Garagozzo each went 2-for-3 with two RBI's, and Jae Williams went 2-for-4 with two RBI's on a two-run homer in the third.

The win gave Georgia State (6-1) their fourth straight win over Kennesaw State (3-6), their longest winning streak in series history since both teams first faced each other in 1984.

True freshman John Beverley also delivered a solid performance in his first career start.  Though the Lawrenceville, Ga. native didn't record a hit, he drove in two runs on a sacrifice fly and RBI fielders choice.  He also recorded his first collegiate stolen base in the third and made two spectacular catches; the first a running catch mid-stride near the fence in foul territory in the fourth inning; the second in the seventh when he reached over and behind his head to rob the Owl batter of a base-hit.

GSU outhit KSU 10-8 and also capitalized on a combined 12 walks with only three strikeouts by seven different Owl pitchers.  The Panthers took a quick 3-0 lead in the first on a no-out, bases loaded RBI groundout by Jesse Donohoe, a base-hit to center field by William Maginnis, and then after a walk by Colin Hynek, one more run on Beverley's sacrifice fly to right field.
Nate Anderson hit lead-off solo home run for Kennesaw State in the next inning, and Chris Cole added a two-out RBI single up the middle to pull the Owls within 3-2, but GSU responded with one out in the home-half of the inning when Kaleb Freeman doubled to left field and scored on a double to left center by Michael Maginnis to make it 4-2.
T
he Panthers would then break the game open with four runs on two hits and one error in the third.  With one out, William Maginnis sparked the offense when he reached on a fielding error, advanced to second on a walk, and then caught the Owls napping when he scored from second, sliding under the tag on a throw from first base after the first baseman realized a split-second too late what was happening after John Beverley beat out a throw from second on a fielder's choice.  Beverley would then steal second and score on a base-hit by Nick Garagozzo before Jae Williams hammered his two-run homer over the scoreboard in right field to make it 8-2 GSU.

After a scoreless fourth inning, KSU tallied two runs to pull within four, GSU increased their lead to seven with three walks on two hits and four walks in the home half of the inning.  The
Panthers would then add one more run in the sixth on another hit by Garagozzo with two on before sealing the game with the younger Maginnis' "walk-off" double.

Quin McManmon (2-0) and Tysen Benford combined for seven strikeouts in seven innings and allowed just four runs.  McManmon got the start and pitched for 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.  Benford came on in the fifth and allowed two runs on three hits, but settled in and retired the last seven batters he faced and was credited with his first career save.

Georgia State will host No. 6 Georgia at the GSU Baseball Complex on Wednesday, February 26 at 4 p.m.
