Georgia State gets 17 Bench Points in 53-50 Win against Appalachian State

ATLANTA, GA --The Georgia State women's basketball team got a 17-point showing from the bench on the way to a 53-50 victory against the Appalachian State Mountaineers at home Saturday.

The Panthers (14-12, 7-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Mikyla Tolivert, who had 16 points. Mya Williams tacked on 12 points off the bench and Crystal Henderson added nine points, four assists and four steals.

The Georgia State offense was very productive from three point land, pouring in 10 threes on 30 attempts. Williams was the most prolific shooter for the Panthers, draining four treys in the contest.

Georgia State's defense held Appalachian State to only 32.7 percent shooting from the field, including 29.2 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Georgia State went on an 8-0 run with 8:18 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Tolivert, to take a 10-2 lead. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-15 advantage. Georgia State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.

Appalachian State rallied to take a 24-21 lead before Georgia State went on a 12-0 run starting at the 2:55 mark in the second period to take a 33-24 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Georgia State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 15 points.

Georgia State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Williams, to expand its lead further to 40-34 with 2:25 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Panthers added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 43-36 edge. Georgia State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 10 total points.

The Panthers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Georgia State took advantage of four Appalachian State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
