MIAMI, Fla. — Grace Lanier and Crystal Henderson each turned in double-double performances, but the Georgia State Panthers (4-5, 0-0 SBC) came up short on the road Friday, falling to the Florida International Panthers (4-3, 0-0 SBC) 103-92.
Georgia State placed four players in double figures, led by Kaleigh Addie's 17 points and two steals. Ari Dyson added 15 points and two steals, while Lanier provided a spark off the bench with 14 points and a remarkable 10 steals.
Defensively, the Panthers were disruptive throughout, forcing 29 FIU turnovers and turning those into 38 points. Lanier's 10 steals marked a new single-game high in GSU program history.
How It Happened
Georgia State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 37-24 at the end of the first quarter.
The Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 63-44 halftime deficit.
Florida International continued to increase its lead after halftime, building an 81-55 advantage before Georgia State went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 81-60 with 2:13 to go in the third. The Panthers continued to reduce the Florida International lead, shrinking it to 86-66 by the end of the third quarter. Georgia State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 22 total points.
Georgia State came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on an 8-0 run to shrink the deficit to 86-74 with 8:45 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept their comeback going, but Florida International managed to hold on for the 103-92 win. Georgia State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 18 of its 26 points in the paint.
