Panthers Come up Short in a 40-27 Loss to Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. -- Georgia State fell 40-27 to Coastal Carolina on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Chanticleers improved to 6-3 on the year and 5-1 in Sun Belt Conference play, while the Panthers fell to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in conference matchups.

Jordon Simmons led all Panthers rushers with 99 yards and one touchdown in the contest, picking up 5 yards per carry. Dennis Murray Jr. also added 19 yards on the ground, averaging 6.3 yards per carry.

Ted Hurst reeled in 10 catches for 165 yards and one score. Grant Hollier got in on the action in the passing game as well, hauling in three balls for 58 yards and one touchdown.

Jartavius Flounoy paced the Georgia State defensive effort, totaling three tackles, 1.0 TFL and one sack. His sack marked a career-first. Jabriel Rhodes-Nelson added seven tackles, 2.0 TFL and one sack, and Rashad Amos had in the loss.

Defensively, Georgia State held up fairly well against the Coastal Carolina passing attack, holding the Chanticleers to 120 yards through the air.

Georgia State took care of business in the red zone, scoring four times on four trips inside Coastal Carolina's 20-yard line, with all of those scores being touchdowns.


How It Happened

After falling behind 7-0, Georgia State fired back with a touchdown with 5:07 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7.Coastal Carolina scored to go ahead 14-7 before the Panthers responded to tie the game at 14-14.

Coastal Carolina fought back to take a 40-14 lead before Georgia State put a touchdown on the board to cut into the lead with 7:42 remaining in the fourth quarter and make it a 40-20 game.The Panthers then scored again, narrowing the gap to 40-27. Neither team scored again in the game.
