ATLANTA, GA – The Georgia State women's basketball team (4-3, 0-0 SBC) overcame a tight first half to pull away for a 69-64 victory over the Samford Bulldogs (3-5, 0-0 SoCon) at home Tuesday afternoon inside the GSU Convocation Center.
Georgia State had three players dropping in double figures. Morgan Robinson-Nwagwu led the way with 21 points, nine rebounds, and two steals on .750 shooting percentage. Crystal Henderson added 16 points, while Kaleigh Addie chipped in 11 points and two steals.
The Panthers dominated the offensive glass, led by Robinson-Nwagwu's three offensive rebounds, finishing with 13 second-chance points off 13 boards. On the defensive end, Georgia State held Samford to just 39.7% from the field, helping secure the win.
How It Happened
After falling behind 11-6, Georgia State sparked an 11-0 run with 5:53 left in the first quarter to take a 17-11 lead. The Panthers lost some of that momentum but still entered the quarter break ahead 21-16, capitalizing on seven Samford turnovers to convert 10 points.
Georgia State maintained its lead early in the second quarter and went on a 5-0 run at the 5:00 mark, highlighted by a three from Obasuyi, pushing the advantage to 30-21. The Bulldogs battled back to tie the score at 32-32 by halftime. The Panthers dominated the paint in the first half, scoring six of their 11 points close to the basket.
After the half, Samford briefly took a 45-42 lead before Georgia State responded with a 6-0 run, capped by a Robinson-Nwagwu three-pointer, to retake a 48-45 edge with 36 seconds left in the third quarter. The lead held until the period ended, with Georgia State's bench contributing four of the team's 16 third-quarter points.
In the fourth, Samford surged ahead 61-57, but Georgia State answered with an 8-0 run to take a 65-61 lead with 53 seconds remaining. The Panthers steadily extended the margin and closed out the game for a 69-64 victory.
