GREENVILLE, SC — The Georgia State women's basketball team (2-2, SBC 0-0) fell just short in a thrilling 90-89 overtime loss to the Furman Paladins (2-2, SoCon 0-0) Thursday night on the road.
The Panthers had four players reach double figures, led by Morgan Robinson-Nwagwu, who poured in 25 points while adding seven rebounds and five steals. Kaleigh Addie contributed 17 points and two steals, and Crystal Henderson added 13 points, four assists, and three steals.
Georgia State dominated the offensive glass, securing 15 offensive rebounds that turned into 14 second-chance points, highlighted by Ari Dyson's five offensive boards.
Defensively, the Panthers were disruptive, forcing 32 Furman turnovers and converting those takeaways into 30 points. Grace Lanier paced the team with five steals, keeping Georgia State in striking distance throughout the contest.
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-11, Georgia State went on a 5-0 run with 1:05 remaining in the first quarter to take a 16-14 lead, which held for the remainder of the period. The Panthers did much of their early damage in the paint, scoring eight of their 16 points close to the basket.
Furman answered back to take a 27-23 lead, but Georgia State rallied with a 5-0 run starting at the 2:31 mark in the second quarter, highlighted by a basket from Crystal Henderson, to regain a 28-27 lead. The Panthers maintained control the rest of the period, entering halftime with a narrow 31-30 advantage, fueled by 10 of their 15 points coming in the paint.
The third quarter saw Georgia State surrender its lead, trailing 53-52 heading into the fourth. The bench stepped up, contributing six of the team's 21 third-quarter points and keeping the Panthers within striking distance.
Early in the fourth, Georgia State grabbed a 56-55 edge before going on another 5-0 run, capped by a Kaleigh Addie layup, to push the lead to 61-55 with 7:19 remaining. Furman responded, tying the game at 75 and sending it into overtime. Georgia State capitalized on seven Paladin turnovers in the quarter, turning six into points.
In overtime, Furman briefly took a 78-75 lead with 3:54 left, but the Panthers answered with a 6-0 run, finished by Gabbie Grooms' jumper, to go ahead 81-78 with 3:08 to play. Furman ultimately regained control, outscoring Georgia State 12-8 down the stretch, handing the Panthers a heartbreaker in a 90-89 overtime loss.
