Chappelle Puts up Career-High 23 Points in Home Opener

ATLANTA-- Sophomore Joah Chappelle had a career-high 23 point showing to pace the Panthers, but Georgia State men's basketball fell to the Presbyterian Blue Hose 63-61 at home Monday evening.

"We have to give credit where credit is due," Head Coach Jonas Hayes. "I think the offense created some open looks, but we couldn't finish them."

Joah Chappelle led the Panthers with 23 points and six rebounds and Micah Tucker tacked on six points, four assists and two steals off of the bench. Anhtony Enoh helped out with eight points off the bench.

Led by Chappelle's three offensive rebounds, Georgia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.

The Georgia State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 14 Presbyterian turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the other end of the floor. Malachi Brown led the way individually for the Panthers with two steals.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 23-17 advantage, Georgia State went on an 8-0 run with 5:55 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Chappelle, to increase its lead to 31-17. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 35-25 advantage. Georgia State capitalized on nine Presbyterian turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.

Presbyterian then erased the Georgia State lead in the game's final quarter for a 63-61 comeback victory. Georgia State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 26 total points.
