Chappelle Records Double-Double in 90-56 Win Over Fort Valley State

ATLANTA --Joah Chappelle collected a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Georgia State men's basketball team over the Fort Valley State Wildcats 90-56 at home on Thursday evening.

"I have to give a ton of credit to Fort Valley State," Head Coach Jonas Hayes said. "They brought a level of effort and intensity that I think our team needed to play against. I'm proud of our guys the way we responded and earned this win tonight."

The Panthers had four players score in double figures, led by Micah Tucker, who had 18 points. Malachi Brown added 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals and Chappelle chipped in as well with a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Led by Chappelle's four offensive rebounds, Georgia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.

Georgia State was effective in disrupting Fort Valley State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Christian Beam led the way individually for the Panthers with two rejections.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 24-15 advantage, Georgia State went on an 8-0 run with 8:45 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Jakai Newton, to increase its lead to 32-15. The Panthers then added seven points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 50-26 advantage. Georgia State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down 10 shots to account for 30 of its 50 points.

Following intermission, Georgia State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 64-35 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Isaiah Sherrard's jumper, to grow the lead to 71-35 with 10:57 to go in the contest. The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 90-56 win. Georgia State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting six shots from deep to score 18 of its 40 points.
