Panthers Come Up Short in Close Battle with South Alabama

ATLANTA -- Georgia State fell 38-31 to South Alabama on Thursday night at Center Parc Credit Union Stadium.

Cameran Brown led Georgia State's passing attack with 241 yards through the air, tossing four touchdowns and one interception. The signal caller also added 67 yards on the ground.

Jordon Simmons totaled 78 yards to lead the Panthers' ground attack in the game, picking up 7.1 yards per carry along the way.

Brown's most prolific target in the ballgame was Ted Hurst, who caught five passes for 110 yards and two scores. Dennis Murray Jr. got in on the action in the passing game as well, hauling in three balls for 54 yards and one touchdown.

Kedrick Walker paced the Georgia State defensive effort, collecting nine tackles, 2.5 TFL, and 1.5 sacks. Team added and Braeden McAlister had in the loss.

The Georgia State offense did a good job prolonging drives, converting on 46.2 percent of third-down attempts. The Panthers also went 2-for-3 on fourth down.

Defensively, Georgia State held up fairly well against the South Alabama rushing attack, holding the Jaguars to 188 yards on the ground. In part because of that stellar defense, Georgia State runners out-gained their South Alabama counterparts 199-188.

How It Happened

Georgia State responded to a 7-0 lead from South Alabama with a score to tie it up at 7-7 with 7:15 left in the first quarter.South Alabama scored to go ahead 14-7 before the Panthers scored again to tie it up at 14-14.

South Alabama fought back to take a 28-14 lead before Georgia State put a field goal on the board to cut into the lead with 8:04 left in the third quarter and make it a 28-17 game.The Panthers then scored again, narrowing the gap to 28-23.

Georgia State scored again, an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brown to with 9:38 left in the fourth quarter, and took a 31-28 lead in the process. Georgia State didn't score again and South Alabama tacked on 10 more points to finish off the scoring.

» Georgia State had their highest scoring quarter in the fourth period, when they put up 14 points.
» Georgia State converted 6 of 13 third downs while South Alabama was successful on 8 of 14.
» Kedrick Walker led the Panthers with nine tackles.
» Reed Chandley punted two times for the Panthers with an average of 48 yards per punt while pinning the Jaguars inside their own 20 one time.
» Georgia State went 2-for-3 on fourth down, converting on 66.7 percent of attempts.
» The Panthers didn't allow a sack in the contest.
» The Panthers offense came out of halftime firing on all cylinders, scoring 17 unanswered until the Jaguars got on the board again.
» Bishop Davenport led the Jaguars passing attack, completing 16 of his 22 attempts for 280 yards and two touchdowns.

After a bye week, the Panthers hit the road to Conway, South Carolina to face Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 8.
