Mikyla Tolivert scored 14 points and
Patience Williams scored 13 but Georgia State fell 64-57 in Game One of their home-and-home series with Old Dominion at the GSU Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams will rematch at Chartway Arena in Norfolk Virginia on Wednesday, January 29 at 6:30 p.m. Georgia State (9-11, 3-6 Sun Belt) will face Eastern Michigan for the GSU-MAC Challenge at the GSU Convocation Center on Saturday, February 8 at 2 p.m.
Tolivert hit four field goals, one from three-point range, plus five free throws to hit her team-high 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Williams scored her 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Cheyenne Hollomon went 3-of-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from three to score eight points, and
Crystal Henderson dished out a team-high seven assists.
Georgia State shot 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from three and forced 16 turnovers, including 10 steals, but couldn't overcome nine thee-pointers from Old Dominion (14-7, 6-3 Sun Belt) and a 48-28 rebounding advantage from the Monarchs.
Both teams swapped the lead three times to open the game before ODU went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good.
Down by nine with 7:51 left in the third quarter, the Panthers rallied with a 7-0 run on layups by
Patience Williams and
Kaleigh Addie plus a three-pointer by
Mikyla Tolivert to pull within two. ODU would then increase their lead to 48-42 heading into the fourth, and then 54-42 on back-to-back threes by Simaru Fields and Brenda Fontana.
The Panthers rallied with another 7-0 run on two free-throws by
Crystal Henderson, a layup by Tolivert, and a three-pointer by
Mya Williams to pull within five, but would get no closer.
Three players scored in double-figures for Old Dominion. Fields led ODU with 19 points, Fontana finished with 12 points, and Simone Cunningham tallied a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
