Two Penalty Kicks Seal 3-2 Victory as Surrency Ties Georgia State Wins Record

ATLANTA, -- Georgia State secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over USC Upstate Friday (Sept. 13) at the GSU Soccer Complex, tying Head Coach Brett Surrency for the all-time wins record with 143 in program history. Bryan Silva opened the scoring just 34 seconds into the game with his first goal of the season, giving the Panthers an early lead. In the second half, Georgia State extended their advantage with back-to-back penalty kicks, first from Justin McLean in the 53rd minute and then from Tom Williams in the 55th minute, netting their first goals of the season.

How it Happened

Georgia State grabbed a 1-0 lead when Bryan Silva scored his first goal of the season in the minute, assisted by Tom Williams.

The Spartans evened the match on a goal from Luke Halkett in the 30th minute.

Georgia State broke up the 1-1 tie on Justin Mclean's 52nd-minute goal.

The Panthers made it a 3-1 lead with a 54th-minute goal from Tom Williams.

USC Upstate closed the gap to a 3-2 game on Dzenan Cerimagic's goal in the 74th minute, assisted by Shayne Abrams and Carson Hickok. The match finished without another goal scored.

  • Josue Hangi collected four saves for the Panthers out of nine total Spartans shots.

The win improved Georgia State's record to 2-3-1 overall.
