Lane's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Georgia State Over Coastal Carolina 72-71

ATLANTA, GA --Toneari Lane hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds on the clock to lift Georgia State to a 72-71 win over Coastal Carolina at the GSU Convocation Center Wednesday as the Panthers won for the fourth time in their last five games.

Dwon Odom hit the tying 3-pointer from the corner with 31 seconds left. After Coastal Carolina scored to take a 71-69 lead, Odom pushed the ball up the court and found Lane in the same corner spot for the game-winner.

Lane led the Panthers (13-14, 7-8) with 16 points, including three crucial 3-pointers in the last five minutes, two of them in the final 75 seconds. Odom had 14 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals. Lucas Taylor scored 15 points and Brenden Tucker added 12, while Jay'Den Turner contributed eight points, eight rebounds and five steals.

Georgia State had to overcome a poor shooting night (36 percent from the field), a 54-31 rebound deficit against the much taller Chanticleers and foul trouble, but the Panthers helped themselves by forcing 17 turnovers (11 in the second half) while committing only four themselves.

How It Happened

Georgia State used an an 8-0 run late in the first half to take a 37-30 halftime advantage. But in the second half, Coastal Carolina (8-18, 5-10) scored 10 straight to take a 48-42 lead with 12:37 to play.

The Panthers trailed 67-61 with under two minutes, but Toneari Lane nailed a 3-pointer with 1:14 left to bring GSU within 67-64. Dwon Odom came up with a huge steal in the backcourt, leading to Lucas Taylor's jumper that made it 67-66 with one minute to play.

Coastal's Jacob Meyer, the freshman point guard who scored 23 points, hit two free throws to extend the Chanticleers' lead to 69-46 with 46 seconds left. But Odom, not known for his long-range shooting, hit from the corner to tie the game at 69-all with 31 seconds left.

"It's really about being confident and just being ready when the opportunity is there," said Odom, who has made six 2-pointers all season, two of them tonight. "I don't take too many, but I take enough to stay prepared."

After Meyer hit a floater with 10 seconds left to regain the lead for Coastal Carolina, Odom pushed the ball up the court and found Lane in the same corner spot in front of the GSU bench for the game-winner with 1.8 seconds left.

"We called a set. My guy right here to my right [Lane] knew where he needed to go, his point guard found him, and he stood up and shot it," Georgia State head coach Jonas Hayes said. "If the best shooter in the conference is wide open in the corner, you know what, I expect him to make that. It's a shot he makes every day."

Lane was asked it that was his favorite spot, and before he could answer, Hayes chimed in, "His favorite spot is the court."

Georgia State, playing its final four regular season games at home, hosts Texas State Saturday at 2 p.m. at the GSU Convocation Center. For tickets, visit GeorgiaStateSports.com/tix.
