NORFOLK, VA -- Georgia State scored the final seven points of the game to rally for a 68-65 win at Old Dominion, completing a sweep of the season series against the Monarchs Saturday night at Chartway Arena.
Julian Mackey came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points, none bigger than his 3-pointer that gave the Panthers (12-14, 6-8) a 66-65 lead with 1:23 to play.
That was the last field goal of the game as the Panthers withstood Old Dominion's final possession, which ended when Jay'Den Turner stole the inbounds pass under the ODU basket with four seconds left. Turner then sank both free throws, and the Monarchs missed a desperation heave at the buzzer.
"Road wins are so hard to come by," head coach Jonas Hayes said. "It ain't pretty, but it's beautiful!
"Our team grew up again tonight, overcoming adversity on the road," Hayes continued. "We remained poised and made some big shots down the stretch.
Toneari Lane scored 15 points for GSU on five 3-pointers, and Turner added nine points and 12 rebounds.
Led by Leslie Nkereuwem's four offensive rebounds, Georgia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 19 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.
