Efficient Offense From Cappai, Broom Powers Panthers Past Old Dominion

ATLANTA, GA --Kayla Broom tallied 11 kills with a .556 attack percentage to help power the Georgia State volleyball team to a five-set victory (22-25, 30-28, 25-18, 20-25, 15-12) against the Old Dominion Monarchs Friday at home at GSU Sports Arena.

The conference victory improved Georgia State's record to 11-8 overall and 2-5 in Sun Belt play.

The Panthers were led by a double-double from Alessia Cappai, who registered 16 kills and 18 digs on the day. Peyton Gash also added 12 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Livy Kowalkowski chipped in for with 19 digs to go with six blocks from Myllena Torquetti.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Panthers fell behind early, dropping the first set 25-22. Old Dominion grabbed the advantage for good at 9-8 in a set that was knotted up five times before the Monarchs took control.

SET 2 | Georgia State responded to pick up a 30-28 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Panthers grabbed the set propelled by a strong showing on the attacking end. Georgia State put together a .326 attack percentage with 19 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands five times, the Panthers took control for good at 29-28 and rode that advantage to victory.

SET 3 | Georgia State grabbed another win in set three to make it a 2-1 match. The Panthers seized the set 25-18. Georgia State took the lead for good at 9-8 in a set that had just one lead change before the Panthers took over the lead. Georgia State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Old Dominion attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 Old Dominion attacking errors on the way to victory.

SET 4 | Georgia State couldn't keep the win streak going, as the Monarchs forced a fifth set with a 25-20 fourth-set win. The Panthers trailed by as many as seven points as Old Dominion grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 and Georgia State was never able to recover in a set that was knotted up three times before the Monarchs took over the lead.

SET 5 | Georgia State opened a two sets to one lead and fought off Old Dominion's rally attempt, which included a fourth set victory, to win the fifth set 15-12 and the match 3-2. The Panthers took set five propelled by a solid showing on the attacking side. Georgia State put together a .364 attack percentage with 10 kills in the set win. The Panthers took their first and last lead of the match at 11-10 and rode it to victory.

The Panthers are back at home tomorrow to take on Old Dominion at 2:00 p.m.
