ATLANTA— Georgia State men's soccer opened its home slate for the 2023 regular season and secured a 5-1 victory over UAB on Monday at the GSU Soccer Complex. Ethan Sassine led the Panthers in scoring while connecting on a pair of goals in the 35' and 41' minutes.
Simon Carlson connected on a PK in the fourth minute to give GSU an early 1-0 lead. The Panthers tacked on another score with a goal from Tom Williams — his first of the season — in the 22' minute, assisted by Justin McLean.
GSU went ahead 4-0 following the goals by Sassine. Evan Schroeder's first goal of the season in the 71' minute, assisted by Oliver Hlynsson, made it a 5-0 count.
With a goal by UAB in the 77' minute, the 5-1 count held to the finish and GSU secured its first win of the regular season.
Goalkeeper Josh Hangi totaled three saves for the Panthers out of nine total Blazers shots. GSU finished totaling 16 shots with nine shots on frame.
GSU improves to 1-1-0 overall following the win.
The Panthers return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 1 for a road matchup against Memphis. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. ET with ESPN+ set to broadcast the match.
