Panthers Fall in Series Finale at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS -- Georgia State's Will Mize hit a game-tying home run in the top of the eighth inning, but Texas State scored two in the bottom half to win 7-5 in the series finale Sunday at the Bobcat Field and complete the series sweep.

The Panthers (24-25, 11-13) got homers from Mize (No. 9 of the season) and Matt Ruiz (No. 8) to give them 96 on the season.

Ruiz, the junior shortstop, had an RBI-groundout in the first inning and then in the fifth, he hit a 2-run homer to tie the game at 4-all.

Georgia State jumped in front with two runs in the first inning. After Cameron Jones was hit by a pitch and Max Ryerson singled to put runners at first and second with one out, Luke Boynton singled on a slow roller down the third base line. The third baseman threw the ball away to allow Jones to score, and then Ruiz's grounder up the middle brought home Ryerson for a 2-0 lead.

But the Bobcats (33-16, 15-9) answered in the bottom half on Chase Mora's 3-run homer to take a 3-2 lead.

Georgia State returns home to host Wofford Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex in the final midweek game of the season. Then the Panthers host Georgia Southern next weekend, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
