Mize Delivers Go-Ahead Run in 10th as Panthers Rally to Clinch SBC Tourney Spot

NORFORK, VA. -- Colin Hynek drove in the tying run in the ninth inning and then Will Mize delivered the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th as Georgia State rallied for a 5-4 win at Old Dominion Thursday at Bud Metheny Ballpark.

With the win, Georgia State clinched a berth in the Sun Belt Conference Championship, which opens next Tuesday in Montgomery, Ala.

The Panthers (28-26, 15-13 Sun Belt) entered the ninth inning down 4-2. Luke Boynton singled off the pitcher to lead off the inning and Matt Ruiz singled through the left side to put runners at first and second. After JoJo Jackson sacrificed the runners to second and third, pinch hitter Dylan Strickland drove in one run on a ground ball to the first baseman. Then Hynek singled to right field to score Ruiz with the tying run.

Cameron Jones led off the 10th with a walk, and then Max Ryerson singled. After both runners moved up on an errant pickoff throw, Mize dropped a single into shallow right field to score Jones form third with the go-ahead run.

Freshman closer Brady Jones (2-1) came on in the bottom of the ninth and retired the side, with help from a double play turned by Ruiz at shortstop, who caught a looping liner and stepped on second to double the runner.

After Georgia State took the lead in the top of the 10th, Jones, the rookie from Decatur High School, struck out the side in the bottom half to end the game.

GSU starter Ryan Watson pitched seven innings in another strong outing. He allowed a 3-run homer to Edwards in the third inning and a run in the fourth on a double play, but after that, he retired 13 of the final 15 batters he faced. He struck out four to reach the 200-mark for his career, good for fifth in Georgia State history.

Zach Ottinger pitched a scoreless eighth inning to give the Panthers the chance to rally.

Jones, who was 2-for-3 on the night with two walks, stole his 35th base in the second inning to break the Georgia State season record. He surpassed a record that had stood for more than 40 years, set by Jimmy Fowlkes in 1980.

Georgia State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a 2-out, 2-run single by Ruiz.

The series continues with a 3 p.m. game Friday.
