Three Pitchers Combine for 4-0 Shutout, Series Win over Old Dominion

NORFORK, VA. -- Max Ryerson and Matt Ruiz homered, and Rafael Acosta, Joseph Brandon and Cameron Jones combined for the shutout as Georgia State won its fifth straight game with a 4-0 win at Old Dominion Friday at Bud Metheny Ballpark.

The win clinches the series for the Panthers (29-26, 16-13 Sun Belt) and is Georgia State's school-record 16th Sun Belt Conference victory.

Acosta, the senior right-hander, started and pitched six innings, allowing just four hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Brandon, another senior righty, came on in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings with three punchouts. Old Dominion had a mild threat in the eighth when Edwards doubled with two outs, but Brandon struck out the Monarch's top hitter Hunter Fitz-Gerald to end the inning.

Jones moved from right field to the mound to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth inning. He struck out the first two batters and then induced a fly ball to end the game.

Ruiz gave Georgia State the early lead when he led off the second inning with his ninth homer of the season.

It was Ryerson's turn in the third. After Jones singled with one out, he homered to left field, his team-leading 18th of the season and No. 40 in a Panther uniform, for a 3-0 lead. He ranks fourth in GSU history after just two seasons.

The score remained 3-0 until the eight inning, when Jesse Donohoe delivered an insurance run with a 2-out, ground-rule double to score Ruiz, who singled with one out.

The Panthers supported the pitching staff with strong defense, including two double plays, giving GSU four in the series.

Georgia State and Old Dominion (31-22, 14-15)  series and the regular season conclude with a noon game Saturday. The Sun Belt Conference Championship begins next Tuesday in Montgomery, Ala.
