Panthers Lose in Extras at James Madison

Harrisonburg, Va. -- Georgia State tied the game with three runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but James Madison won 7-6 on a bases-loaded hit batter in the bottom of the 10th in the series opener at Veteran Memorial Park.

Colin Hynek homered for Georgia State (14-16, 4-6 Sun Belt), Cameron Jones had three hits and four stolen bases, and Dylan Strickland drove in two runs.

The Panthers trailed 6-3 in the eighth inning when Strickland delivered a 2-out, 2-run single up the middle to cut the deficit to one.

In the top of the ninth, Matt Ruiz tripled with one out and scored the tying run on Jones' groundout to force extra innings.

Fenwick Trimble led off the bottom of the 10th for JMU (18-11, 4-4) with a bloop double, and Kyle Novak beat out a bunt single. Georgia State brought in a fifth infielder and intentionally walked Mike Mancini to set up a force, but Jaylon Lee drew the hit by pitch to bring home the winning run.

After GSU starter Joseph Brandon pitched a career-long with six strikeouts, freshman reliever Brady Jones struck out the side in the eighth, and another freshman hurler, Kameron Douglas, pitched a scoreless ninth.

With four stolen bases, Jones now has 24 on the season, equaling the third-best season total in program history and the most for a Panther since 1984.

The series continues with a 6 p.m. game Friday.
