Strickland's Grand Slam Sends Panthers to Series Sweep

ATLANTA -- Dylan Strickland's grand slam ignited Georgia State's six-run comeback in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader and sent the Panthers (24-21, 11-10 Sun Belt) to a sweep of Marshall (16-25, 5-16), 7-6 and 5-1, to complete the series sweep at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Game 1: Georgia State 7, Marshall 6

Dylan Strickland tied the game with a grand slam in the seventh inning as Georgia State rallied from a 6-0 deficit to defeat Marshall 7-6 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Trailing 6-0 entering the seventh inning, Georgia State scored seven runs and held on for the win.

Matt Ruiz led off the seventh with a single and advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt. After Will Mize was hit by a pitch, JoJo Jackson put the Panthers on the board with an RBI single. Then Caleb Stewart reached on a bunt single to load the bases.

Drew Harlow relieved Marshall starter Raymond Pacella and walked Jesse Donohoe to bring in a run, pulling GSU within 6-2.

Then Strickland hit the first pitch over the wall in right center for a game-tying grand slam, his 11th homer of the season and the fifth grand slam for Georgia State.

Ruiz put the Panthers ahead with a sacrifice fly for a 7-6 lead.

After Marshall's Chris Noble led off the eighth with a single, freshman closer Brady Jones came on and recorded the final six outs, including three strikeouts, to pick up his second save of the week and fourth of the season.

Joseph Brandon (3-4) earned the win for Georgia State, as he pitched four innings in relief of starter Rafael Acosta and allowed one run on four hits.

Pacella, the Marshall starter, was outstanding, holding the Panthers without a hit until Max Ryerson singled with one out in the sixth inning.

Game 2: Georgia State 5, Marshall 1

Max Ryerson and Will Mize hit solo home runs, and five Georgia State pitchers combined to allow just one run on three hits as the Panthers completed their sweep of Marshall with a 5-1 win.

After Marshall pushed across a run in the top of the first, Ryerson answered for Georgia State with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, his second homer of the series and 13th of the season.

That remained the score until Mize delivered in the fourth inning with a solo shot to center for his eighth of the season.

Georgia State added two more in the sixth on an RBI-double by JoJo Jackson and a wild pitch, and one more insurance run came home on a wild pitch in the eighth.

GSU starter Camren Landy allowed one run on three hits, all in the first inning. From there, the the Panthers' staff did not allow hit and walked just three.

After Landry pitched four innings, Duncan Lutz (1-0) pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts to earn the victory. Davis Chastain, Kameron Douglas and Cameron Jones followed with one scoreless inning each to close out the win. The staff collected 10 strikeouts with just three walks.

Georgia State plays at No. 5 Vanderbilt Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET and then travels to Texas State next weekend.
