Jackson, Ryerson Lead 20-0 Win for Largest Shutout in Program History

CLINTON, S.C. -- JoJo Jackson's grand slam ignited a seven-run fourth inning to send Georgia State to a 20-0 win at Presbyterian for the largest shutout victory in program history.

The Panthers earned a split in Saturday's doubleheader as Presbyterian scored four runs in the ninth inning for a 9-8 walk-off win in Game 1.

Georgia State (7-4) hit five home runs on the day, including two by Max Ryerson. The senior went 5-for-8 on the day with four RBI and four runs scored. After hitting a school-record 22 homers in 2022, Ryerson has 26 homers for the Panthers to move into a tie for ninth place in GSU annals. Counting his one season at Charleston Southern, he has 35 career homers.

Will Mize (5-for-9, 5 RBI on the day) and Dylan Strickland hit back-to-back homers in Game 1.

Four Panther pitchers allowed just four hits and combined for 17 strikeouts in the shutout in Game 2.

GSU starter Joseph Brandon (1-0) tied his career-high with seven strikeouts in five scoreless innings, and then three freshmen finished the shutout.

Brady Jones made his debut in the sixth and struck out the side. Quin McManmon fanned five in his two innings, and then David Bell made his mound debut with a scoreless ninth and struck out two.

Georgia State collected 15 hits and scored in seven of the nine innings. The 20-0 margin matches a 20-0 victory over Alabama A&M in 2013 for the largest shutout in program history.

Shortstop Matt Ruiz drove in three runs and outfielder Cameron Jones added two RBI.

The Panthers jumped in front with two runs in the first and led 3-0 after two before scoring seven in the fourth, including Jackson's grand slam, his team-leading fifth homer of the season.

In Game 1, Ryerson's 2-run homer gave Georgia State an 8-3 lead in the eighth inning, but the Blue Hose answered with two in the bottom half and then scored four in the ninth.

The series concludes with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
