Ryerson Hits Tying HR in 9th But Panthers Fall in Slugfest

Box Score BOONE, N.C. -- Max Ryerson tied the game for Georgia State with a 2-run homer in the top of the ninth inning, but Appalachian State won 15-14 in the bottom of the ninth in a slugfest at Smith Stadium.

App State won the series, two games to one.

Georgia State third baseman Will Mize drove in five runs in the first two innings with a 2-run home run and a 3-run double, helping to stake the Panthers (13-11, 4-2 Sun Belt) to an 8-0 lead in the second inning and a 10-3 advantage after three.

But App State scored five runs in the fourth and fifth to pull within 10-8. 

GSU outfielder JoJo Jackson hit his seventh homer of the season in the top of sixth to make it 11-8, but the Mountaineers took their first lead at 12-11 with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Georgia State tied the game on an RBI by Cameron Jones in the eighth, but App State scored two in the bottom half to take a 14-13 lead into the ninth inning.

Pinch hitter Michael Maginnis led off the ninth with a single. With one out, Ryerson hit the 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for a 2-run homer, his sixth of the season, to tie game at 14-all. 

After App State put runners at first and third with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, Georgia State used a five-man infield to get the first out, but Hayden Cross reached on error, allowing the winning run to score for the 15-14 victory.

Georgia State will be back in action Tuesday, when the Panthers host Georgia Tech at Coolray Field in a 6 p.m. game at the home of the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers.
