Merrill, Jean Lead Panthers to Victory Over Marshall

ATLANTA— Georgia State women's basketball secured a home win facing Marshall on Saturday with strong performances by junior forward Deasia Merrill and sophomore guard Nyla Jean. Merrill posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Jean's 13 points were highlighted by two go-ahead free throws with 19 second remaining in the game to help the Panthers outlast Marshall, 55-54.

The 2 p.m. tip saw GSU come out swinging as the Panthers went ahead 23-9 early in the second period. The team converted on 7-9 free throws in the first half while knocking down 3-5 three point attempts.

Merrill and Jean led the Panthers in scoring at the half with eight points each. Despite the strong play early by GSU, Marshall found its rhythm in the second period and battled back to a 30-28 lead in the Herd's favor entering halftime.

GSU regained a 41-37 lead following a defensive heavy third period. Merrill notched another six points in the paint to go with five points from junior guard Mya Byrd.

The fourth period saw six lead changes as each team traded buckets. Sophomore guard Mikyla Tolivert was instrumental late notching seven points off 3-7 shooting to go with an assist.

Down one with 2:48 to play, Jean connected from three to give GSU a 53-51 lead. Marshall tied the game after hitting a layup, then converted on an and-one opportunity to once again take the lead with 1:45 to play.

With just 19 seconds remaining, Jean drew a foul and knocked down each free throw giving GSU the lead and lifting the Panthers to victory over Marshall, 55-54.

Head coach Gene Hill spoke highly of the sophomore guard following Saturday's win.

"I was really proud of Nyla," Hill said. "She had a few turnovers, and I was getting onto her about a few shot selections at times, but she never dropped her head and she stepped up big when we needed her. She hit that three, then went to the line and hit those two— it just shows how tough of a kid she is."

Georgia State women's basketball returns to conference play on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 22 facing Coastal Carolina. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. ET
