Nyla Jean scored 18 points and
Mikyla Tolivert scored 12 as Georgia State fell 71-57 to Southern Miss on Thursday morning at the GSU Convocation Center.
Jean's 18 points fell one point shy of her career-high 19 set against James Madison on January 28. The sophomore from Tampa, Fla. shot 5-of-9 and 3-of-7 from three and made 5-of-6 free throws.
Tolivert's 12 points came on four made field goals and four free throws.
Deasia Merrill added nine points and
Alyssa Phillip led GSU on the glass with five rebounds.
Georgia State (10-18, 4-11 Sun Belt) rallied from a 19 point deficit in the second quarter to pull within six with 5:50 left in the fourth. The Panthers started their rally with a 10-0 run in the final five minutes of the first half to pull within nine at halftime and outscored Southern Miss 16-15 in the third to pull within eight. Zay Dyer and
Nyla Jean cut the deficit to six, but GSU would get no closer.
Domonique Davis led the Lady Eagles (17-9, 10-5) with 20 points.
GSU will face Marshall for their annual Play4Kay game on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the GSU Convocation Center. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
