Panthers Fall Short in Back-and-Forth Battle At Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va.— Traveling on the road for a conference battle facing Old Dominion, Georgia State women's basketball fell short of victory on Saturday despite a strong team effort led by sophomore guard Mikyla Tolivert. Tolivert accounted for a game-high 19 points with four rebounds and one assist in the high-energy outing versus the Monarchs as the Panthers were defeated, 60-54.

Tolivert connected on 5-6 free throws while charting 50% from the field through 33 minutes. The native of Melbourne, Florida has averaged 14.6 points per game this season to go along with a 43.2 field goal percentage and 26% from deep.

Deasia Merrill posted a strong performance for the Panthers on Saturday as the junior forward finished with 13 points with seven boards and two steals. Nyla Jean finished third on the team in points with 12 and helped the Panthers cut the lead late off a steal and made layup.

GSU saw a tight matchup against ODU in the first half of play as neither team led by more than six points before halftime. ODU managed a five point lead entering the half.

Returning to action for the second half, the Panthers regained momentum late in the third eventually cutting the lead to just one. Early in the fourth, Jean connected on a take to the basket after being fouled and converted on the and-one to give GSU the lead.

The remainder of the game saw back-and-forth, fast-paced play with both teams trading leads. With under a minute remaining, ODU would draw a foul and connect on a pair of free throws to go ahead, 58-53.

The Panthers managed another point off a free throw, but were unable to cut the lead before time expired as GSU was outlasted by ODU, 60-54.

Tehya Lyons finished with 6 points including a pair of rebounds, one assist and a steal. Mya Byrd led the team in assists with two.

GSU will return home this Thursday, Feb. 16 for another matchup with Sun Belt Conference foe Southern Miss. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. ET at the GSU Convocation Center.
