Alex Gitchenko scored a career-high 11 points and
Zay Dyer tallied her fourth double-double, but Georgia State fell 81-58 to the Troy Trojans at the GSU Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Gitchenko shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from three to top her previous career-high of nine set against Coastal Carolina in 2022. Dyer scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting with 11 rebounds.
Deasia Merrill and
Nyla Jean each added eight points, and
Mya Byrd recorded seven assists.
Georgia State (8-9, 2-2 Sun Belt) held Troy to 17.6 percent from three and outrebounded the Trojans 41-37 while shooting 12-of-14 from the free throw line, but the Panthers shot 35 percent from the field and doomed themselves with 28 turnovers.
Down 14-8 with 3:29 left in the first quarter, a three-pointer by
Nyla Jean and a three-point play from
Tehya Lyons sent GSU on a 6-0 run to tie the game. Both teams hit two free-throws to end the first, and then
Zay Dyer put the Panthers up 20-16 with two free-throws and a layup before Troy (8-7, 3-1) used a 12-0 run to take the lead for good.
The Trojans' offense then heated up, shooting 50 percent in the second half after shooting 34.4 percent in the first while outscoring the Panthers 22-16 in the third quarter and 29-17 in the fourth to pull away.
Georgia State will travel to San Marcos, Texas on Jan. 12 to face Texas State. Tipoff is at 12:00 p.m.
