Truscott Puts Down 15 Kills in Sweep Over Marshall

HUNTINGTON— Senior outside hitter, Julianna Truscott, tallied 15 kills in the Panthers three-set conference victory over Marshall (25-23, 25-23, 28-26).
 
The Panther faced new Sun Belt conference member, Marshall, on Thursday night for the first time since 2018. The Panthers have been atop the Sun Belt Conference in blocks and did not slow down tonight totaling seven team blocks.
 
Set 1
Getting things started for the Panthers, Truscott and Clara Bednarek went up big and gave the Panthers an early 3-2 lead.
 

 
The Herd would go on an 3-0 lead before back-to-back aces by Bednarek tied things up at eight. The teams traded points, with kills from Erin Wyatt and Laura Ehieze keeping the Panthers in it. Truscott laid down the hammer and tied the set up at 12.
 

 
Kills from Isabelle Percoco and Izzy Durnell gave the Panthers a two-point advantage. A big block by Percoco and Ehieze put the Panthers up 23 – 20, before a Truscott kill gave the Panthers set point. The Herd would challenge the final point of the set but would be unsuccessful and the Panthers took set one 25-23.
 
Set 2
Truscott got things started for the Panthers in set two, with a pair of kills. Errors plagued both teams early in the second set, and neither team was able to gain momentum. A long rally, including great digs by Durnell and Livy Kowalkowski, ended in a Georgia State point and tied the set up at 18. Down by two, Percoco went cross court for a kill to bring the Panthers back within one.
 


Truscott would tie it up with a kill before an error by the Herd gave the Panther set point. A block from Truscott and Bednarek would win the set for the Panthers, 25-23 after a 5-0 scoring run.
 
Set 3
Percoco and Ehieze sent one straight down with a big block in the third set to give the Panthers an early lead.
 


The Panthers trailed for most of set three, going down by as many as four at times. Back-to-back kills by Wyatt brought the Panthers within one, however Marshall was able to side-out. The Panthers block was reliable once again, and tied the set up at 21 all.
 

 
Truscott gave the Panthers the lead, but the Herd responded and earned the set point. The Panthers saved two set points to tie the set up at 24. Marshall would get a third set point at 26-25, but a kill by Truscott tied the set once again. Wyatt sent one deep to set up match point before Bednarek slammed one home for the win, 28-26.
 

 
Stats
There were 36 total ties and 15 lead changes in the three-set match. Truscott tallied 15 kills, her most in a three-set match this season, along with three blocks. Percoco put down 11 kills, also her most in a three-set match this season, and three blocks. Middle blocker Laura Ehieze led all players with five blocks alongside six kills. Bednarek notched four kills, two blocks, and two aces. Wyatt just missed a double-double with eight kills and nine digs alongside two aces. Durnell put down five kills. Setter Jenna Brown dished out a season-high 27 assists for a three-set match. The sophomore just missed a double-double as she also picked up nine digs. Maren Palmer recorded 16 assists, also a career-high for her in a three-set match, along with two aces and six digs. Defensive specialist, Ryan Spicer-Gordon, saved 11 digs and libero, Kowalkowski notched 18.
 
The Panthers are back in action tomorrow in Huntington, W. Va. for round two against Marshall at 2 p.m. ET. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
