Taylor Earns Pro Opportunity with Atlanta Braves Organization

Matt Taylor, Georgia State's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator the last three years who has been instrumental in the program's growth under head coach Brad Stromdahl, has accepted a position with the Atlanta Braves organization as a minor league pitching coordinator.

Stromdahl made Taylor his first hire after taking over the GSU program in the summer of 2019 in a move that has paid huge dividends on the field and the recruiting trail.

"I wish Matt the best in his new venture and am grateful for the time he invested at Georgia State working along side me shaping and molding the future of this program," Stromdahl said. "His technical expertise and strategic mind will be an asset to the Braves organization for many years to come.

"From our staff, players and administration we are excited to see Matt's continued rise and can't wait to see what the future holds for him. Light it Blue!"

This spring, Taylor helped coach the Panthers to their first 30-win season since 2015 as his pitchers set a school record with 505 strikeouts, and the GSU bullpen collected 17 saves, second-most in program history.

In 2021, Taylor's staff helped the Panthers navigate one of the nation's most challenging non-conference schedules, resulting in four victories over nationally-ranked teams, highlighted by a 4-2 win at No. 2 Vanderbilt for the highest ranked win in program history. Following the season, senior Tyler Koch signed a professional contract.

In his first season in 2020, Taylor made an immediate impact on the Panthers' extremely young staff, which returned only two upperclassmen from the previous year. GSU allowed only a .227 batting average against and ranked among the national leaders with 10 runners picked off in 16 games in the abbreviated season.

Two-way standout and two-time, first-team All-Sun Belt selection Cameron Jones has excelled on the mound the last two seasons, as the Friday starter in 2021 and then as a top reliever in 2022.  In 2020, right-hander Chad Treadway was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

Taylor has also directed unprecedented recruiting success, helping the program assemble back-to-back classes that are among the best ever at Georgia State. The Panthers' incoming Class of 2022 was rated No. 37 in the nation, the highest-ranked class in program history.

Stromdahl will conduct a national search for Georgia State's next pitching coach.
