Cheney, Stewart Homer to Back Strong Pitching in 12-1 Win

ATLANTA -- Griffin Cheney and Caleb Stewart homered and four Georgia State pitchers combined on a 4-hitter in the Panthers' 12-1 win over Appalachian State Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

GSU starter Trey Horton (1-1) earned the victory as he pitched five innings and allowed just one unearned run on three hits with six strikeouts.

Dylan Matela followed with two perfect innings in which he struck out four. Kyle Riesselmann fanned two in a 1-2-3 eighth, and Rafael Acosta added two strikeouts in the ninth, giving the staff 14 for the game.

Cheney delivered a first-inning home run for the second straight game, this one a 2-run shot to center field for his 14th homer of the season. He is second in the Sun Belt Conference to teammate Max Ryerson, who has 16.

Georgia State (26-21, 11-11 Sun Belt) led 4-1 before erupting for eight runs in the fourth inning.

After Stewart led off with a single, Luke Boynton and Cameron Jones smacked run-scoring doubles for the first two runs of the inning. Josh Smith singled home one run and another scored on an error to make it 8-1.

With two outs, DeAngelo Abboud doubled to left field to score two, and then Stewart hit a 2-run homer, his third of the season, to give the Panthers a 12-1 lead.

Stewart, the freshman from Waycross, Ga., was 3-for-4 on the night with two RBI and three runs scored.

Jones also went 3-for-4, and Smith finished with two RBI.

Georgia State will look to clinch the series in Saturday's 4 p.m. game Saturday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
