Cheney Homer in 8th Lifts GSU to Series-Clinching Win

Senior has homered in three straight games, now has 15 on the season

ATLANTA -- Griffin Cheney hit the go-ahead home run in the eighth inning to lift Georgia State to a 4-2 win over Appalachian State Saturday at the GSU Baseball Complex, clinching the series for the Panthers (27-21, 12-11 Sun Belt).

Cheney, the super senior infielder, homered for the third straight game and the 15th time this season, which is second in the Sun Belt Conference to teammate Max Ryerson.

In a 1-1 game, Cheney came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and a runner at third base. He hit the first pitch from App reliever Caleb Cross (1-1) over the right field wall for the opposite-field, 2-run homer.

After Luke Boynton drew a 2-out walk, Max Ryerson added an RBI-double for a 4-1 GSU lead.

App State (15-28, 5-17 Sun Belt) managed one run in the ninth, but Ryan Watson shut the door for his team-leading eighth save.

The GSU pitching staff was outstanding for the second straight day, highlighted by 12 strikeouts. App State managed eight hits, but only three of them left the infield.

GSU starter Brandon Kaminer pitched three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Chad Treadway followed with three innings, allowing only a solo homer by Andrew Greckel.

Lefty Seth Clark (4-0) pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings to earn the victory.

In a scoreless game, Luke Boynton hit a solo homer in the fourth inning. His 10th long ball of the season give Georgia State three players with double-digit homers for the first time since 2014. As a team, the Panthers have hit 64 homers on the season, the fourth-best season total in program and the most with the current bats.

Georgia State will go for the series sweep Sunday in a 1 p.m. game at the GSU Baseball Complex.
