Panthers Lose Second Straight One-Run Game to No. 10 Texas State

ATLANTA -- Georgia State dropped its second straight one-run game to No. 10-ranked Texas State, falling 5-4 Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Trailing 5-1, the Panthers (30-25, 15-14 Sun Belt) rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within 5-4 but could get no closer.

Griffin Cheney and Dylan Strickland had three hits each for Georgia State.

GSU catcher Kyle Hilton led off the seventh with a single, and then Will Mize singled with one out to put runners at first and third. After Cheney walked to load the bases, Cameron Jones delivered a 2-run single to pull the Panthers within one.

The Strickland dropped a single into shallow center field to score Cheney and make it a one-run game.

Cheney singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth and put the tying run on base, but Texas State (43-11, 25-4) closer Tristan Stivors earned his Sun Belt-leading 17th save.

The series and the regular season concludes with a 1 p.m. game Saturday, which is also Senior Day. The Sun Belt Conference Championship opens next Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Ala.
