Ryerson Ties GSU Record with 21st HR in 7-4, Series-Clinching Win

JONESBORO, ARK -- Max Ryerson tied the Georgia State season record with his 21st homer of the season to lead the Panthers to a 7-4 win at Arkansas State Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium, clinching the Sun Belt Conference series.

Ryerson matched the GSU home run record originally set by Chad Smith in 2000. The junior outfielder has homered in four straight games, going deep five times since last Sunday.

He also delivered a two-out, two-run single for three RBI on the night, giving him a team-leading 59 on the season.

Luke Boynton added a two-run homer for the Panthers (29-23, 14-12 Sun Belt), and Griffin Cheney contributed an RBI single.

GSU starter Mason Patel (2-2) pitched five innings and allowed just one run on three hits to earn the victory. Ryan Watson finished the game with 2.2 scoreless innings for his ninth save.

Watson, the junior right-hander, now has the second-best season total for saves in program history and stands third with 12 career saves.

Cheney put the Panthers on the board in the third inning with his two-out single that drove in Caleb Stewart, who reached on an error.

Then Ryerson led off the fourth with his solo homer to left center, and Boynton followed an inning later with his 11 homer of the season for a 4-1 lead.

In the sixth, Stewart started a two-out rally with a double, and then Cheney and Boynton drew walks to load the bases. That brought Ryerson to the plate, and he singled up the middle to bring home two runs and give the Panthers a 6-0 lead.

Arkansas State (11-34, 5-20) made things interesting with three runs in the seventh before the Panthers added an insurance run on a passed ball in the eighth.

Georgia State will go for the series sweep Sunday at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
