Women's Tennis Drops 4-1 Decision to South Alabama, Splits Matches on the Road

Mobile, Ala.- The Georgia State women's tennis team wrapped up its weekend road trip in Alabama with a matchup against conference foe South Alabama on Sunday. Despite a competitive match that saw all six singles positions extended to three sets, GSU ultimately dropped courts No. 2, No. 1 and No. 4 as the team was defeated, 4-1.

Entering the match having posted a third consecutive conference win over Troy on Saturday, the Panthers traveled to Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts in Mobile, Ala. looking to extend the team's winning streak in Sun Belt play.

GSU fell behind early with a loss in doubles as Troy jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Dropping first sets in four of six court positions, the Panthers rallied for second set victories in all four of the positions.

The Panthers fell behind, 2-0, as Troy managed to claim court No. 2. Angel Carney earned GSU a much-needed point to narrow the margin with a victory, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, in the fifth position. The win extends Carney's win streak in singles competition to 12 straight.

GSU regained momentum as the team positioned itself for a chance at winning with Andreea Stanescu leading on court No. 3 and Pragnya Kumar battling in a close match on court No. 6. Both matches would go unfinished, however, as Troy narrowly secured wins on courts No. 1 and No. 4 and claimed the victory.

Moving to 3-1 in conference play and 10-5 on the season, the Panthers remain in a favorable position having posted wins in 10 of 12 outings. GSU will return home next weekend as the team gears up to host conference matches against Louisiana on Saturday, March 26 and ULM on Sunday, March 27.

Both matches will be hosted by the Panthers at the GSU Clarkston Courts with match times set for 10 a.m. ET. Information on live scoring will be posted to the team's social media accounts on the morning of each match.
