Women's Tennis Secures Victory Over Appalachian State in Conference Opener

ATLANTA- The Georgia State women's tennis team opened conference play on Sunday with a matchup against Sun Belt foe Appalachian State. Senior Andreea Stanescu clinched the match for the Panthers as the team closed out its first of two home matches slated for the week and moved to 8-4 on the season.

Coming off a weekend that saw the Panthers post back-to-back shutouts at home to wrap up non-conference competition, GSU returned to action hosting its first Sun Belt opponent of the spring 2022 season in Appalachian State. The team secured an early point with a win in doubles as Stanescu and partner Ellie Aldrich saw victory, 6-4, in the No. 2 position. Partnering in No. 3 doubles, Pragnya Kumar and Eva Chivu also accounted for a strong win, 6-2.

GSU carried the momentum into singles as four of the Panthers' six court positions saw quick first set victories. Following Sofya Golubovskaya being forced to retire on court No. 2 for medical reasons and Appalachian State securing the point in the second position to even the match, 1-1, Kumar earned the team a second point with a victory, 6-1, 6-2, in the sixth position.

With a win, 6-2, 6-1, Carney secured her ninth consecutive singles victory while competing in the fifth position for GSU. Posting dominant performances in every outing, Carney has yet to drop a set since entering the winning streak and has allowed opponents to score more than three points only once.

Appalachian State earned a second point after claiming court No. 4. Leading 3-2, senior Andreea Stanescu clinched the match point for the Panthers with a decisive victory, 6-3, 6-4, on court No. 3 to earn GSU a win, 4-2, in its first conference outing.

The Panthers will return to play on Monday, March 14 to face Coastal Carolina in the team's second conference matchup. Originally scheduled for Saturday and set to be played at Peachtree City Tennis Center, weather concerns forced the match to be postponed.

Match time for Monday's outing against Coastal Carolina is set for 11:30 a.m. ET at the GSU Clarkston Courts. Live stats will be available and posted to the team's social media accounts prior to the match. Follow Georgia State women's tennis on Twitter (@GSUWTennis) and Instagram (@GSUWomensTennis) for more information and for the latest news and updates throughout the season.
