Merrill, Lyons Lead 76-65 Win at ULM in Regular Season Finale

Panthers Open Sun Belt Tourney Wednesday vs. Georgia Southern

MONROE -- Behind a career-high 16 points from Deasia Merrill and a season-high 15 points by Tehya Lyons, Georgia State finished the regular season with a 76-65 victory at ULM Saturday at Fant Ewing Coliseum.

Georgia State (10-15, 4-9 Sun Belt) enters next week's Sun Belt Conference Championship in Pensacola, Fla., having won two of its last three games. The Panthers will be the No. 10 seed and will face No. 7 Georgia Southern Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET at the Pensacola Bay Center.

GSU shot 52 percent from the field, the Panthers' high in a Sun Belt game this season, and sank 22 free throws. Good ball movement produced 19 assists on 23 baskets.

Merrill went 6-for-8 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds. Ashley Foster scored 11 for the Panthers, along with four assists and three steals, and Elexus Bell added nine points.

The Panthers scored the game's first nine points and jumped out to a 20-4 lead. GSU still led by 16 two minutes into the second quarter at 26-10 before taking a 33-24 halftime lead.

Georgia State kept the Warhawks (4-12, 0-14 Sun Belt) at arms length until a 10-1 run brought ULM within 46-44 with 2:23 left in the third quarter. But Merrill scored four straight for the Panthers, who led 53-48 after three quarters.

The Panthers built their back to 10 midway through the fourth quarter before ULM made one last run, pulling within 63-61 with 3:21 to play. But again, Merrill answered with a layup, and Georgia State sealed the win at the free throw line.

Kyren Whittington led ULM with 27 points on 12-for-17 shooting from the field, but the Panthers limited her teammates to a combined 14-for-39.
