Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Furious Comeback Falls Just Short as Panthers Fall to Georgia Southern 88-79

PENSACOLA, Fla.-In the final game on Wednesday of the Hercules Tires Sun Belt Conference Championship, the Georgia State women's basketball team nearly pulled off a comeback for the ages before falling to in-state rival Georgia Southern 88-79 on Wednesday night at the Pensacola Bay Center.

No. 10-seed Georgia State (10-16) trailed by 26 points with less than 15 minutes to play before cutting lead to the No. 7-seed Georgia Southern (18-9) to just seven points with 3:45 to play.

Taniyah Worth led Georgia State with 15 points, one of five Panthers to finish in double figures. Alyssa Phillip added 12 points, Nyla Jean scored 11, while Deasia Merrill and Ashley Foster each scored 10 points a piece.

Georgia Southern was led by Mya Burns who scored 20 points knocking down three of the Eagles' eight 3-pointers. Taya Gibson added 19 points, while Terren Ward just missed a double-double with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Georgia Southern got off to a quick 7-0 start before an Alex Gitchenko jumper got the Panthers on the board.

The Eagles pushed the lead to 13-2 knocking down their first three 3-pointers before Georgia State responded with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to four and force Georgia Southern to call its first timeout.

Georgia Southern led 19-13 after the first quarter, but the Panthers cut the deficit to just three before the Eagles responded with an 8-0 run to take a 29-18 lead with 7:02 to play in the second quarter.

Knocking down six-of-seven shots, the Eagles pushed the lead to 34-20 with just over five minutes to play in the half.

Georgia State went into the locker room trailing 50-36 as the Eagles shot 56.7 percent in the first half including 6-of-8 from 3-point range.

Georgia Southern pushed the lead to 66-40 with 4:38 to play in the third quarter before the Panthers started to mount a comeback, finishing the quarter on a 15-2 run to cut the deficit to 68-55 with 10 minutes to play.

The Panthers scored eight of the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to continuing cutting into the lead and trailed just 70-63 with 8:37 to play.

Unfortunately, that is as close as the Panthers would get despite shooting better than 50 percent from the floor in the second half.

Georgia Southern finished the night shooting 47.5 percent from the floor and 8-of-16 from 3-point range. The Eagles now advance to the quarterfinals on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. ET to face No. 2-seed UT Arlington live on ESPN+.
