Panthers Complete DH Sweep on Pearson's Walk-Off RBI, Move to 3-0

ATLANTA -- Dalton Pearson's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Georgia State a 6-5, walk-off victory over Purdue Fort Wayne to complete a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader at the GSU Baseball Complex. The Panthers won Game 1 12-2 and moved to 3-0 on the season.

Pearson had four hits and three RBI in the twin bill. Will Mize also had three RBI on the day, while Max Ryerson homered twice.

The series continues with a noon game Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

GAME 1: Georgia State 12, Purdue Fort Wayne 2

Max Ryerson hit a pair of solo home runs and Georgia State starter Chandler Dawson pitched five scoreless innings as the Panthers defeated Purdue Fort Wayne 12-2 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Dawson (1-0), the sophomore right-hander, allowed just three hits and collected a career-high five strikeouts in the longest outing of his career. Over his last 10 appearances dating back to last April, Dawson is 4-0 with one save and a 1.37 ERA.

Ryerson, the junior designated hitter, led off the game for the Panthers with his first homer of the season, an opposite field shot to right field, and then he went deep to left field in the fourth inning to give GSU a 4-0 lead.

Third baseman Will Mize drove in three runs, and catcher Chase Wullenweber added two RBI. Josh Smith, Dalton Pearson and D'Angelo Abboud had two hits each.

Relievers Rafael Acosta (three innings) and Nick Lommen (one inning) finished the game, allowing two runs on four hits.

GAME 2: Georgia State 6, Purdue Fort Wayne 5

Georgia State rallied from a 5-1 deficit with five runs over the final three innings, capped by Dalton Pearson's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth for the 6-5 walk-off win and doubleheader sweep.

Trailing 5-1, the Panthers scored three runs in the seventh inning, pulling within 5-4 on Pearson's two-out, two-run single. Josh Smith led off the eighth  with a double and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, pinch hitter Luke Boynton reached base and moved to second on a pair of errors and then advanced to third on a fly ball, bringing Pearson to the plate. The sophomore outfielder smacked a fly ball to right field to bring home Boynton with the winning run.

Junior left-hander Seth Clark (1-0) earned the win--his first since 2019--with two innings of scoreless relief, striking out five of the eight batters he faced, including three straight in the top of the ninth.

Purdue Fort Wayne (0-3) got a three-run homer from Garrett Lake and a two-run home run from Isaiah Hart to jump in front.
