Panthers Sweep Purdue Fort Wayne for First 4-0 Start Since 2011

Cheney Drove in 3; Jones Saved the Game with 2 Strikeouts

ATLANTA -- Griffin Cheney drove in three runs and Cameron Jones finished the game with a pair of strikeouts to save Georgia State's 8-7 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex, giving the Panthers a four-game series sweep and a 4-0 start to the season for the first time since 2011.

Current head coach Brad Stromdahl was an assistant coach for that 2011 GSU squad.

"It feels really good to be 4-0," said Stromdahl, now in his third season as head coach. "We had a comeback win, we had a one-run win in the ninth, and we had two wins where we really broke it open.

"Our pitching was outstanding the entire weekend. Everybody put the ball in the zone and competed really well. Offensively we got timely hits, and everybody contributed up and down the lineup.

"We know what we are capable of, and now we need to continue to put together consistent execution."

Georgia State (4-0) took an 8-4 lead into the ninth inning, but the Mastodons (0-4) scored three to pull within 8-7 with one out and runners at first and third. That's when Jones, who moved from first base to the mound, came on to strike out No. 4 hitter Isaiah Hart for the second out. After a walk, Jones fanned Jarrett Bickel on three pitches to seal the win and earn his first save of the season.

Jones, the sophomore from Kathleen, Ga., also had two hits and an RBI for the Panthers.

Georgia State starter Dylan Matela struck out a career-high eight in just three innings, allowing one earned run and three hits.

Freshman right-hander Trent Reddick, making his debut, allowed two runs in the fourth but then tossed three scoreless innings, retiring the final 10 batters he faced. He gave up three hits and no walks walks in four innings while striking out two.

Tied 2-2 after two innings, Georgia State moved in front with three runs in the third on Cheney's RBI-single, a wild pitch and an error.

The Panthers added two more in the fourth on an RBI-single by Jones and a sacrifice fly by Cheney. In the fifth, GSU moved ahead 8-4 as Will Mize scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Hilton.

Georgia State's first midweek game is scheduled for Wednesday at Kennesaw State in a 5 p.m. contest at Stillwell Stadium.
