Panthers Rally Before Falling to Stetson 7-6

DELAND, Fla. – Junior Bailee Richardson continued to impress early in the season, but it was not enough as the Georgia State softball team fell to host Hatters 7-6 in the final game of the Stetson Lead Off Classic on Sunday.

Richardson, who opened the season on Friday batting for the cycle, went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored on Sunday and is now hitting .444 through five games.

Georgia State (1-4) got off to a slow start and trailed Stetson (3-2) 4-0 heading to the top of the fourth before the bats erupted for six runs.

Richardson and Sofie Mooney both singled to get things going. A batter later Carolyn Deady singled to left field scoring Richardson and cut the deficit to 4-1. Sofia Tunon then singled to left, scoring Mooney to cut Stetson's lead to 4-2.

After Jackie Gonzalez reached on a muffed throw, Alice Thomas, who had pinch run for Deady, scored to cut the deficit to one. Gabby Benson followed with a single to left field scoring scoring Tunon to tie the game. Emily Brown followed with her second triple of the season, scoring Benson. After Chloe Middlebrooks walked, Richardson came to the plate again and singled to left, scoring Brown.

Stetson got one back in the bottom of the fourth, but the Panthers held the lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Hatters scored two more to take a 7-6 lead.

Emily Buck pitched all 6.0 innings for the Panthers allowing eight hits and striking out three. Jamie Tino picked up her second win of the season allowing just two hits over 3.1 innings.

Georgia State will return to action on Wednesday traveling to Cullowhee, N.C., for a doubleheader with Western Carolina at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
