Panthers Come up Short in Return Home

ATLANTA – Georgia State returned home after two weeks on the road to take on new Sun Belt Conference member, Old Dominion. Unfortunately the Panthers homecoming came up short as they fell to the Monarchs, 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 25-20).

Senior Isabelle Percoco opened the match with a kill for the Panthers. The teams would go on and trade points, with neither team being able to ignite a run. The match was tied at 15-all until a run by the Monarchs put them up 20-15 over the Panthers. That would be enough to put the match away as the Panthers were unable to bounce back dropping the opening set, 25-18.

The Panthers opened set two with kills from a slew of hitters including Julianna Truscott, Izzy Durnell, and Isabelle Percoco. The hot streak continued as Clara Bednarek served up an ace to put the Panthers up 15-11. The Monarchs fought their way back into the match closing the gap to two, but the Panthers pulled away once again. A sneaky dump from Maren Palmer won the set for the Panthers 25-21.

The Monarchs opened the third set with a 4-0 run to give them an early lead. While the Panthers kept it close early in the match, another late 4-0 run from the Monarchs would ultimately cause the Panthers to fall, 25-21.

With nine tie scores and four lead changes set four was back and forth for the majority of the set. Tough serving by Evoni Lemons, including an ace, helped the Panthers on a 4-0 run giving them a 12-10 lead. Tied at 17-all the Monarchs went on a 4-0 scoring run themselves. The Monarchs were able to close and, after an unsuccessful Georgia State challenge, would win 25-20.

Livy Kowalkowksi led the Panthers with 20 digs. Truscott and Percoco both notched double-digit kills with 10 and 13 respectively. The Panthers' setters dished out 46 assists total- Maren Palmer with 21 and Jenna Brown with 25.

The Panthers will face the Monarchs again tomorrow at 1 PM. Prior to the match the Panthers will honor their four seniors, Ryan Spicer-Gordon, Julianna Truscott, Laura Ehieze, and Isabelle Percoco. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
