Panthers Fall on Last-Second, Half-Court Shot

ATLANTA -- Georgia State fell 62-61 to Eastern Kentucky on a last-second, half-court shot by Cooper Robb in the first game of the Capitol Classic presented by Legacy at the GSU Convocation Center.

Dwon Odom led the Panthers with 16 points and eight rebounds. Brenden Tucker added 12 points, and Ja'Heim Hudson contributed nine points and nine rebounds. Kalik Brooks scored a career-high eight points off the bench.

The Panthers (2-2) led the entire second half until EKU took a 56-55 lead with 3:07 to play. But Georgia State quickly responded with six straight points. Odom regained the lead with a layup, and then Ja'Heim Hudson swiped the ball for a steal that resulted in a fast-break layup by Odom. After a stop and a defensive rebound by Edward Nnamoko, Hudson's turnaround jumper in the lane gave GSU a 61-55 lead with 1:22 left.

But back-to-back Georgia State turnovers let EKU hang around, and Leland Walker's 3-pointer with eight seconds left pulled the Colonels (2-2) within 61-59.

Odom was fouled in the backcourt, and the sophomore guard, who hit 11-of-12 from the line last game vs. Mercer, missed the front end of the one-and-one. EKU rebounded, and Robb's last-second shot from about 50 feet was good.

The Panthers played much of the game without two starters due to injuries as Jamaine Mann played just six minutes and Evan Johnson left the game early in second half.

"I want to give credit to EKU. I think they have a tremendous team that plays a style that forces you to be on all cylinders," GSU head coach Jonas Hayes said. "We had some key guys go down, but that's not an excuse. We've got find away to rally and still get some plays made. This is another opportunity to see how our team can handle adversity and move on."

Georgia State played a strong first half, shooting 57 percent from the field and leading by as many as 20.

After back-to-back driving layps by Tucker and Stubbs, the Panthers built a 41-23 with 2:00 left. Then Stubbs found Hudson all alone under the basket for a dunk and a 20-point lead at 43-23 with 1:34 left before EKU managed the last five points of the half. Still, the Panthers took a 43-28 advantage into the locker room.

But in the second half, with two starters down, Georgia State struggled to execute on offense, scoring just 18 points and turning the ball over 14 times.

The Panthers will be in action again tomorrow in the Capitol Classic, facing Texas A&M-Commerce at 3 p.m.
